Gareth Belton and his wife Rainbo are both scientists who used to dive and collect seaweed from the bottom of the sea to study it. When Gareth first met James Erskine from Jauma Wines in 2012, he developed an interest for winemaking and wine-growing; James Erskine and Anton Von Klopper, among others, showed him the joys of making his own wine and working in the vineyard while following natural principles and environmentally-friendly working methods. This philosophy was instantly shared by Gareth who started to buy grapes from his neighbours to make his wine. In 2015, he managed to get his hands on a small plot of Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. In his newly acquired vineyard, Gareth follows a zero-adding approach to work the vines and make wine the most natural way possible. He doesn’t even follow biodynamic methods, as he prefers to let the vine grow itself, with minimal intervention.
